Nick again, with the first real update from Japan. We had a long and uneventful flight. It's painful to be on a plane for 13 hours but seeing the Alaskan mountains from the air was some consolation.

I didn't expect the jet lag to hit this hard, but it is and I'm exhausted. Kansai Gaidai is really pretty. Miranda and I got here late last night after a long and delayed bus ride. We checked in, met our Resident Advisors, and went to our rooms. Most of me just wanted to lie down on the mattress and fall asleep, but I took a few minutes to unpack and connect to the internet. I also made my bed, incorrectly I later discovered. There were two "sheets," a flat sheet and a sheet that looked like a fitted sheet only it didn't stretch at all. I managed to squeeze my mattress into it, but something still wasn't quite right. I found out the next morning that it was a cover for the duvet, which makes sense. The flat sheet should go on the mattress, and the cover on the duvet. This error will be rectified before I go to bed tonight.
They also have these very peculiar pillows stuffed with beans. I was skeptical, but when I got in bed last night, and especially when I laid on my back, I was surprised by how comfortable the pillow was. It was firm and supportive, but not hard and rock-like. It could be the fact that I'd just finished a 20+ hour travel experience, but I slept great.

It's Miranda writing now! We made it to Japan! Just 133 days until we have to make the flight back. Overall, the flight didn't feel as long to me as it was. The hardest part of the whole trip was staying awake to combat jetlag. So far, I've discovered that a lot of students leave their shoes outside of their dorm rooms; it's typical to wipe down the sinks in the community bathroom after you use one; bean bag pillows are not the worst thing ever; bidets are very fancy, and I actually kind of like them; and my room is very cold.

Back to Nick.
We explored campus a bit, registered for classes, and went shopping at a little convenience store near campus. The cafeteria is not opened, so we have to buy/cook our own food for the next few days. We grabbed a bag of Doritos to munch on after lunch. They were taco/lime flavored, which was missed when we picked them out. A bit strange, but not awful.
We are in Asia now, and we will be for quite some time. It might take a few more days to wrap my head around that. Fortunately, classes don't start until the middle of next week.
We love and miss you all!
