Zoo Day!

Published on 14 March 2023 at 02:57

Funny, it's Tuesday and I'm writing about what happened TWO weekends ago. I woke up every day this week with the intention to churn out a quick post, but I never got around to it. Let's just say that two weekends ago was really fun. This past weekend was also, but for different reasons. Miranda'll catch you up on it soon.

Sake Saturday! On Saturday, May 4th, Miranda and I visited a sake brewery with our culinary tourism professor. It was really fun and informative. We got to hear about the history of sake, explore the brewery itself, and have a fun tasting at the end.

You can see our earlier post for more information about the different kinds of sake. Let's just say that each bottle tasted different and wonderful. Sake is not hard liquor, it's closer to beer and wine. And there is a complex array of factors that go into the brewing of the rice.

Dinner with some friends was pretty fun! Avocado Burgers!

Sunday, May 5th, after church, Miranda, Connor, and I went to the Tenno-ji zoo in Osaka. On the map, the zoo didn't look very big, but they somehow fit a ton of exhibits and animals all over the park. There was a whole new set of habitats around every corner; it was epic. Most of the animals looked happy, energetic, and healthy. And, which this might have been Miranda's favorite part, there were hundreds of cute families with little kids.

Before the zoo, Miranda and I caught a quick lunch at a cafe! Very nice ambiance and meal :)

Miranda's favorite: BATS! There were so many, it took a while to drag her on to the next exhibit!

Petting zoo, only we were a little bit too old. The horse on the right is super cool. It's a very hairy, traditional Japanese pack animal. Look at its tiny little ears!

Hippopotamus

Rhinocerous

Giraffe-sus

There were a ton of cute animal exhibits: condors, goats, penguins, leopards, you name it!

We didn't get to see the tiger, which disappointed Connor. Especially when we found out why. This was a little shrine set up to remember the poor little guy.

I'm really confused by this graphic. It says don't climb over the fence, but it's a stretch for me to imagine that as a person climbing a fence.

Miranda and I both tried Dippin' Dots for the first time, finally realizing our childhood dreams. YUM!

I was disappointed, there were only 2 snakes in the zoo :(   But this cute frog was nice.

The polar bear put on a great show, jumping in and out of the water over and over again!

After the zoo, we went to this skyscraper and saw a pretty cool view! We were going to eat dinner there also, but all the restaurants were...expensive, or takai as we would say in Japanese.

Don't forget, the souvenirs are the best part!

Miss you all! Next week there probably won't be an update. We have a bunch of tests and midterms again. But my younger brother, Tom, is coming over for spring break, and we'll have lots of adventures to talk about!

Love,

Nick and Miranda.
